Privacy and personal data

What the site records, why, and for how long.

01Audience statistics

The site counts page views and visitors without recording any IP address and without any measurement cookie. A visitor is recognised for a single day by an anonymous fingerprint (computed from a random value of the day, the IP address and the browser); this value is destroyed every day together with the previous day's fingerprints. Only daily totals are kept: countries, cities, languages, origin (search engine, social network…), type of device; and hourly totals, deleted after 14 days. The number of visitors « right now » is computed in memory and never recorded.

Robots and administration sessions are not counted. Visits from hosting and cloud networks are treated as probable robots: only that finding (« hosting: yes / no ») is used, never the address.

To protect the content, the number of requests per minute is limited; this counting happens in memory, and only the visitors going over the limit are written to the security log.

The site team can exclude its own browsers from the count with a private link: a functional cookie « cv_nocount », valid for one year and holding no other data, is then set on that browser.

02Forms

To prevent abuse, the approximate location of the connection (country, region, city) is recorded with each request sent through a form: right of reply, legal request, contribution, profile suggestion, update request. The IP address itself is not kept with the request.

Optional e-mail addresses are only used to reply to you and are never published. No attachment or identity document is requested or kept.

03Security log

For the security of the site, a technical log keeps the IP address of form submissions, attempts to access the administration and triggered anti-abuse limits. These entries are deleted automatically after 90 days.

04Geolocation

The approximate location is determined on the server, without any external service, using the IP to City Lite database by DB-IP (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence); hosting networks are recognised with the IP to ASN Lite database by DB-IP (same licence).

05Installable app

If you install Controversia as an app, the pages and images you read are kept in your device’s cache so that they stay available without a connection. This cache stays on the device, is never sent to the site, and can be cleared from your browser settings (site data). The site only counts, anonymously, the openings from the app (origin « App ») and the number of installations: one total per day, without any IP address or identifier.

06Followed profiles and notifications

The « Follow » button keeps the list of the profiles you follow in your browser only (local storage): no account, no e-mail address. It is erased with the site data in your browser settings, or profile by profile with « Unfollow ».

If you turn notifications on (optional, after a click on « Follow »), the site keeps on its server: the subscription address given by your browser (used only to send you the notification), your language, the list of followed profiles and the date of your last visit. No IP address, no device identifier. The number of subscriptions per IP address is limited; this counting happens in memory and is never recorded.

This data is only used to tell you that a followed profile has changed (new controversy, counters, legal status), with a neutral text, at most once a day. It is deleted as soon as you turn notifications off, when the notification service reports that the subscription no longer exists, or after 12 months without a visit.

To stop: « Turn notifications off » on the « My followed profiles » page, or remove the permission in your browser or phone settings.

07Your rights
