Arrêté en avril 2014, Abu al-Khair a été condamné en juillet par la Specialized Criminal Court à quinze ans de prison, quinze ans d’interdiction de voyager et 200 000 riyals d’amende pour une série de chefs liés à son militantisme, à ses critiques des autorités et à la création d’une organisation de droits humains non autorisée. Une partie de la peine avait initialement été suspendue, mais la juridiction d’appel a rendu la totalité des quinze ans exécutoire en janvier 2015.
